About This Painting

Manola in Livorno is a personal cityscape painting set in Livorno, Italy. The painting brings together place, memory, and portrait-like presence, with Manola becoming part of the life of the city rather than simply a figure placed in front of it.

Some paintings are difficult to photograph because their real strength lives in subtle shifts of color, surface, value, and atmosphere. This has always been one of those paintings: intimate, quiet, and hard to reduce to a single digital image.

Like many of my cityscape paintings, this work began with direct observation and photography, then developed slowly in the studio through drawing, composition, and layers of oil paint. It belongs to the part of my work where the city and personal life meet, where architecture becomes memory and the painted figure carries the emotional center of the scene.
